I have always been curious about form and space in art and, over time, I have developed a code of abstraction with which to explore my ideas. My earlier work was sketchy, with a Cy Twombly look to it, but then I started making my images more solid and recognizable.

Things changed when I moved to the Southwest, especially as I traveled the region and got a feel for those large empty spaces and the flat blue plane of the sky. Bonelike forms and organic shapes were integrated into my work. Mountain, plain and valley forms appeared. My pear pastels became landscape still lifes. I became more aware of landscape and how those spaces fit into my art making process.

Most recently I have been painting buildings and parking lots. In the buildings I am less interested in the architecture than I am in the basic form itself and how it cuts out a rectangle of land and sky. I am interested in the lines and smudges in parking lots. In every parking lot there is a code of light and shadow and the wear of humanity.

I was born and raised in Ontario, Canada. My wife and I moved to California in 1985, and we eventually ended up in Austin, Texas where I earned degrees in Fine Arts and Humanities.
